Help Break New Ground! Participate in Survey of Nonreligious Parents
I don’t want to make too big a deal about this, but DUDE! MY SURVEY FOR NONRELIGIOUS PARENTS IS READY TO GO!
I can’t tell you how excited I am to see this survey come to fruition. Some of you may know that Parenting Beyond Belief author Dale McGowan conducted an excellent survey of nonreligious parents a couple of years ago — the first of its kind — and, in a way, my questionnaire begins where his left off. It delves into how we nonreligious parents make it work in our families and communities, how we’ve chosen to address religion with our children, and the hardships that so many of us face in doing so.
I truly believe the results of the survey will be fascinating, inspiring and important. But it’s going to take a lot of respondents to get there. So please take part, and then pass it on! Have fun, and let me know what you think.

And special props to my friend Catherine Gritchen — my data-collecting inspiration. She’s living proof that Christians can be as open-minded as the rest of us.

Great survey! A little long, but not redundant, and I appreciated the chance to elaborate on some of my answers. I often feel like such surveys don’t offer enough answer options, so a comment field is helpful. If there had been a comment field on your religious holidays question, I would have said that yes, we celebrate Christmas, a secular Christmas, but we do acknowledge its religious significance and the beauty and truth that can be found in the Christmas story. As my daughter is getting older, we also discuss (and watch documentaries about) the historical context of Jesus and his life and the birth of Christianity.
So glad you participated, Caroleigh. Thanks so much.
On 1/23 you replied, “Yep, great points. Fixed them both.” On 1/24 I tried to fill out the survey and the “other” field still did not work. I abandoned the survey. Too bad, though, because I would have liked to finish it.
So sorry you had that problem! Others haven’t, so I’m not sure what happened with your survey. I did change the question, though, so it’s no longer required — in case others are confronting the same issue.
Done! With a three year old and a nine month old, my feedback won’t be the most interesting, but there you have it. I’m looking forward to seeing the final results! When should that be? I know, I know, you just made the darn thing — but I’m curious!
I’m not sure — but I’m shooting for early spring. I’ll need the circulate the survey for up to a month, and then take some time to analyze the results. Thanks so much for your input!
Some comments on the survey:
The profession question was a little lacking in options and the “other field” didn’t work, it forced me to choose one. Information Technology would be a big one.
What’s the difference between not believing in a higher power and not being convinced that one exists?
Yep, great points. Fixed them both. Thanks, Justin!
